By KenNETH W. Millican, B.A., Cantab., M.R. C.S., London: H. K. Lewis, 1883, pp. 107. This essay is a bold application of the Darwinian hypothesis to explain certain anomalous forms and combinations of disease and disputed points relating to the specificity of disease. The general idea is not altogether a novel one, but Mr. Millican develops it more fully than has yet been done, and attempts to show how very rapidly a transition from one specific form to another might take place owing to the extreme rapidity with which one generation of bacteria is replaced by another. The author is necessarily a thorough-going germist, unreservedly attributing active pathogenic properties to the

Some Recent Developments of the Germ Theory, More Particularly in Relation to the Treatment of Phthisis
Twice in the history of this Society have our presidents directed the attention of its members to the influence of germs in the production of disease. Our first president, Dr. Brittan, in the year 1874, propounded, illustrated, and illuminated this question: first, from what we know of diseased blood, and of the " blood diseases;" secondly, from what we know of the blood-germs, and bioplastic m...
متن کاملEffects of Lactic Fermentation by Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum on Antioxidant Characteristics and Lipase and Lipoxygenase Activities of Wheat Germs
Background and Objectives: Wheat germ is the most nutritious part of wheat grains, which has a short shelf-life due to its high lipid contents and presence of lipase and lipoxygenase enzymes. Thus, wheat germs are separated from the whole wheat grains during the flouring process, mostly used as animal foods. The objective of this study was to investigate effects of fermentation by Lactobacillus...
